Abstract: The formation and migration of bed-load dunes results from a complex interplay between bed geometry, turbulent flow field, and sediment transport. In this study we concentrate on developed dunes, whose dynamics has not been completely understood yet. The aim of the present work is to use the results of detailed measurements of flow and sediment transport to demonstrate the existence of hysteresis loops in the relationships between the bed elevation, some properties of the turbulent flow, and the kinematic properties of bed load. Reliable explanation of these loops will require detailed data for sediment transport and flow field in the same conditions (while the data used for the present observations come from experiments with different sediment and hydrodynamic conditions).
