Abstract: As freshwater mussels are among the world’s most imperilled fauna, understanding the flow at the organism scale can provide precious information for their conservation. Given that these mollusks tend to form clusters spanning significant distances, the present work focuses on simulating the open-channel flow over aggregations of freshwater mussels, known as musselbeds. The mussel density (i. e., the number of mussels per m2) has been shown to play a fundamental role in the near-bed hydrodynamics (Sansom et al. 2020), and this motivated the present numerical study focusing on the density-related effects on the fully-developed flow over musselbeds.
