Abstract: The global recognition of environmental pollution attributed to microplastics is widely acknowledged. Microplastics, which are particles characterised by a non-natural polymeric matrix and range in size from 1 um to 5 mm, are currently affecting numerous aquatic systems worldwide, including rivers, estuaries, seas, open oceans, and remote regions (Primpke et al., 2022). The significant prevalence of microplastics in the environment has attracted the scientific community's interest in monitoring these contaminants across various aquatic environments and matrices, including ocean floor sediments.
