Abstract: Monitoring has a key role in environmental protection policies, but the interpretation of the obtained results does not usually account for the associated uncertainty. When uncertainty is considered in data analysis, it usually disregards the influence of the uncertainty arising from sampling, which may be the main source of uncertainty. Moreover, classical sampling strategies are not adequate for the assessment of the environmental status of large marine areas and the evaluation of temporal trends due to their seasonality, heterogeneity and size. All these factors, along with the error of positioning, affect the uncertainty of the collected information on the system.
