Abstract: Supported with laboratory observations, this paper describes the mechanisms that lead to violent eruptions in stormwater and combined sewer systems. This is the first time that violent eruptions have been produced in a laboratory setting. Each geyser produced consists of a few consecutive violent eruptions within a time frame of a few seconds with heights that may exceed 30 m, measured from the top of the drop shaft. These characteristics resemble those geysers that occurred in actual stormwater and combined sewer systems
