Abstract: According to the Water for Prosperity and Peace-2024 United Nations World Water Development Report, socioeconomic development and population growth in today’s world have led to water scarcity and high levels of pollution. Therefore, it is urgent to develop effective ways to treat wastewater. Due to the excellent filtration efficiency, mechanical properties and chemical stability of porous silicon carbide ceramic membranes, their application in the fields of agricultural wastewater, domestic wastewater, industry, and oil and gas has received much attention. In recent years, research has focused on the structural construction of porous silicon carbide ceramic membranes, with particular emphasis on liquid flow ability, pore size distribution, mechanical strength and corrosion resistance; therefore, this paper firstly describes a variety of methods for the preparation of porous silicon carbide ceramic supports and membranes, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of these methods as well as the challenges that still exist. Meanwhile, a corresponding analysis is made for the influence of the preparation methods of porous silicon carbide ceramic membranes on the membrane properties. Then, the porous silicon carbide ceramic membranes are summarized and concluded for the application in wastewater treatment, and the effect on membrane cleaning after application. In addition, the challenges faced by porous silicon carbide ceramic membranes in commercialization are discussed. Finally, the future of porous silicon carbide ceramic membranes and their potential applications in emerging fields are outlined.
