Abstract: The symposium on “Aspects of navigability of constraint waterways, including harbour entrances” was held in Delft, the Netherlands, April 24 to 27, 1978. The symposium was sponsored by I.A.H.R. and co-sponsored by P.I.A.N.C. It emphasized the necessity of looking upon the problem of navigability of constraint waterways as a multi-disciplinary problem. In the design of new waterways this problem is to be solved by a combined effort of organizations and individuals responsible for the channel design, and organizations and individuals responsible for safe navigation in the channel after its completion. In this combined effort items to be considered range from channel characteristics and vessel characteristics on the one hand to the functional aspects of navigation aids and, the executability of tasks to be performed by e.g. pilots on the other. The material presented at the symposium explained the necessity of taking these aspects into account in a multi-disciplinary approach, showing results, both in research and design, derived from it. A report on the symposium is given below.
