Abstract: The extensive previous work on the hydraulic jump by the first two of the authors is taken as the basis for a fundamental discussion of the phenomenon. Special attention is focussed on considerations of conservation of mass and momentum. The resulting comprehensive integral relations are discussed in the light of experimental evidence.
