Abstract: The results of an extensive fundamental study of the so-called spatial hydraulic jump are presented. After an introduction to the hydraulic problems involved in the computation and design of abruptly or gradually enlarged stilling basins, some information about the most important references is added. Then, theoretical considerations and determinations are compared with an evaluation of the numerous empirical results in order to develop an approximate solution which is easy to handle in design practice. The proposed simple formula permits quick and sufficiently accurate design of enlarged stilling basins.
