Abstract: Experiments on the mixing of horizontal dense jets in both co-current and counter current using three dimensional laser-induced fluorescence (3DLIF) are reported. Dilutions were measured in laboratory scale models of single dense jets discharged from a circular port with upward inclination with densimetric Froude numbers approximately equal to 20 for stagnant condition. The effluent, consisting of fresh water with the addition of sodium chloride and a fluorescent dye tracer, was discharged into uniform density fresh water. 3DLIF images were obtained by scanning the beam from an argon-ion laser through the flowfield. The images were analyzed to obtain instantaneous and time-averaged tracer concentrations and the dilution were obtained.
