Abstract: Mild slope flow with vegetation has been studied by many researchers. However, there are few studies about steep slope flow with vegetation. This study aims to examine velocity distribution thought a laboratory experiment and to predict the turbulence intensity of this flow through a numerical simulation so as to estimate velocity and turbulence property distributions. We found clear patterns of velocity and turbulence property distributions of steep slope flow with vegetation in both the experiment and the numerical simulation. In the numerical simulation, the 1D k-εmodels was used and model coefficients were optimized. The simulation result, which used optimized coefficients in this study, shows improvement in terms of the prediction of the turbulence property, and it matched the experimental data well. However, there were differences in the simulation results due to the use of optimized coefficients as well as generally used coefficients. This is likely because pre-optimized coefficients are not suitable for the simulation of steep slope conditions. Therefore, we conclude that the optimization of the coefficients in the k-εmodel is necessary to precisely simulate of the steep flow with vegetation.
