The 40th World Congress of IAHR (International Association of Hydro-Environmental Engineering and Research) was held in Vienna, Austria, from August 21 to 25, 2023.
The Organisers of the Congress have been IAHR and the University of Natural Resources, Vienna (BOKU). The Congress was supported by “Spain Water”, the China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR), as well as the City of Vienna, other local entities, and more than 10 sponsors.
Thereby the Congress focused on “Rivers - Connecting Mountains and Coasts". The program comprised 148 technical and special sessions, four High-Level Panels (HLPs), four Industry Stream Events, and two master classes. Seven keynote lectures on diverse topics enriched the program ranging from “Large Rivers and Humans” over “Machine learning for earth and climate sciences” to “Climate change impacts on African Hydro-environments”.
The International Scientific Committee (ISC) and the Advisory Board provide counsel and support to the Local Organizing Commmittee for the scientific and technical coordination of the congress.
The papers included in this volume were part of the 40th IAHR World Congress which took place in Vienna, Austria, from from August 21 to 25, 2023. Papers were selected and subjected to review by the Editor and the International Scientific Committee and followed a revision process with the following steps: (1) The committees involved in the organisation of the Congress established a set of technical criteria for the committee in charge of the revision. (2) Submitted papers were sent to one or two experts in the field. (3) Authors were asked to include the necessary amendments and follow the reviewers´ comments, and (4) Their work was reviewed until the final version was approved by the Editor.
The monitoring of publishing ethics is a major aspect of editorial and peer-review publications. IAHR is a well-established and long-standing organization whose primary mission is to foster knowledge exchange amongst its community and stakeholder base. Accordingly, IAHR takes its policies on ethics seriously.
The Proceedings of the the 40th IAHR World Congress has been published under the IAHR Publications Ethics and Malpractice Statement.
The 40th IAHR World Congress proceedings are long-term preserved following the IAHR Policy of digital preservation archives.
