Moreover, the company undertakes the utilisation and reuse of products from waste water treatment, while there is the provision of telecom services via the water supply and sewerage networks it operates and of the generation and sale of own-produced electricity (which can be primarily generated by utilising water from springs, dams, aqueducts and pipelines). EYATH’s competencies also include expanding to new areas or modifying water supply-sewerage systems (networks and facilities), in order improve water quality and increase the quantity supplied to consumers. 2. Research and Development EYATH SA is, at the moment, an active partner within five research projects (three Horizon2020 one national and one transnational project). The company is in close cooperation with national universities and research centers by: - Funding its own research projects - Sponsoring of postgraduate and PhD students - Disseminating data and results to researchers and to the public Furthermore, EYATH SA is actively taking part at the EurEau working committees and other expert working groups at national and international level 3.Pandemic’s research and innovation As early as April 2020, EYATH S.A. has been cooperating with the interdisciplinary research team of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, on their research project regarding detection of SARS-CoV-2 in sewage effluents. The project apart from virus detection, focuses on the development of a sound mathematical framework, eliminating possible uncertainties caused by the adsorption of virus fragments onto the highly porous suspended solids of wastewater, thus improving method’s consistency. Samples of the influent of Thessaloniki’s Wastewater Treatment Plant are collected and analyzed at a weekly rate. Efforts are currently undertaken, to provide a more detailed spatial analysis of the virus load in different parts of the city, which is an ambitious goal, since it requires a full resolution discrete topological model within the sewerage networks.
