Session Chair and Moderator: Torkil Jønch Clausen | Chair of the Action Platform for Source-to-Sea Management. Denmark.
Source to Sea underscores the importance of an integrated and intelligent approach to the management of the full water cycle to address the global challenges faced by people and the environment. The freshwater-ocean challenge is a two-way problem: storm surges and sea-level rise cause coastal disasters and salt intrusion. The marine environment is severely affected by land-based activities and flows to the sea of water, pollutants, sediments and materials, including plastics. Understanding the interconnectivity of these hydro-environment systems is essential to realising sustainable futures.
Through this panel discussion, IAHR seeks to contribute the knowledge of the Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research community to major global freshwater and oceans events and processes, such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals on Water and Oceans (SDG's 6 and 14), the annual Stockholm World Water Weeks and World Water Forum in 2022, as well as to major ocean events such as the launch of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development in 2021 and the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon in 2022. In so doing onwards linkages from the Online Forum will be made to the IAHR World Congress in Granada 2022 “From Snow to Sea” and onwards to IAHR World Congress in Vienna 2023 "Rivers - from mountains to coasts".
The purpose of the panel discussion is to bring senior actors from the freshwater and ocean communities to together to share experiences and visions for source-to-sea management, and discuss the latest knowledge regarding the challenges, directions, innovations and solutions at the local, national and international levels.
