He then worked briefly as a senior highway drainage design engineer with MINConsult of Malaysia, before leaving for PhD studies in 1982. Upon completion of his PhD in 1985, he joined, and remained in NTU (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore) until end of 2018. During his 33 years tenure in NTU, he taught many water related courses in the areas of fluid mechanics, hydraulics, hydrology, water resources and environmental engineering. He was the co-investigator for many externally funded research projects in such areas as watershed rainfall-runoff monitoring and modelling, integrated urban drainage, stormwater and water resource management, GIS applications in hydrologic and hydraulic modelling, and sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS). He also served as specialist consultant to many local and overseas private companies and public agencies on over 290 engineering projects related to storm drainage and flood alleviation sustainable stormwater management, water hammer surge analyses and treatment, hydraulic physical modelling, water resources engineering, coastal hydraulics and engineering, dams and reservoirs, water supply, hydro-electricity, dam-break studies, open/river channel and pipe flow hydraulics, general fluid mechanics, hydraulic and hydrology studies, intake and pumping stations, environmental studies, ABC/SUDS/WSUD features and water bodies, climate change related studies, and CFD modelling He currently lectures part time at NTU, serves as World Bank Short Term Consultant (STC), and provides specialist water consultancy services to the industry.
