Abstract: The paper investigates the adequacy of computing flow in compound channel with one-dimensional models in areas where the water surface presents two-dimensional aspects. Experimental results are presented for water profiles reaching the critical depth at their downstream section and two-dimensional features are depicted. Water profiles are then computed using classical methods but also a corrected method (the Exchange Discharge Model) taking into account the momentum transfer in compound channels. Comparison shows the accuracy of the Exchange Discharge Model in the upstream area of the profiles. Modifications of the downstream condition are needed in order to model also accurately the downstream part of the profile.
