Abstract: Composite modeling was used to investigate the hydraulic processes in underground caverns, which are planned to be part of a pump storage plant and should replace the lower reservoir of a traditional design. For a better understanding of the hydraulic processes in the underground an experimental scale model and a 3D hydro-numerical model were combined to benefit of the advantages of both models and to compensate the disadvantages. Highly dynamic, transient loads and processes are caused due to the cyclic filling and emptying of the cavern system, which depends on the way of using the plant for the energy supply system. It was the objective of this study to understand and describe these hydraulic processes and to develop a hydraulically adapted geometry of a cavern system.
