Abstract: This experimental research aims to investigate a real-scale system comprising both surface and sewer drainage under different flows, namely the effects of a linking element gully – drop manhole on the flow. This work focus on a detailed laboratory study carried out on a new laboratory installation termed the Dual Drainage and Multi Link Element installation at the University of Coimbra (DD-MLE), Portugal. The installation comprises a 10 m long and 0. 5 m wide flume, two gullies at the flume bottom, two 1 m diameter manholes, pipes connecting the different elements and equipment such as several electric valves, pressure transducers and flow-meters controlled by a SCADA system. Drainage and surcharged conditions are observed and reported. Global conditions as well as flow patterns such as pressures, water depths and flow discharges for different flow regimes under steady and unsteady conditions are analysed and presented for different configurations of the flow in the drainage pipe and upper-channel. Calculated manhole water-depths show a different behaviour under free-surface and pressurized conditions, namely a linear trend between depth and flow and a trend proportional to the square of velocity. The importance of including unsteady conditions and manholes damping in carefully analysis of urban drainage systems and numerical model tests were justified.
