Abstract: The flow field in vertical slot fishways (VSFs) was investigated by 3D numerical simulations to identify the possible effects of the bed slope (using values from 3.33% to 10%) on fish passage, with particular regards to multispecies rivers. Results show that the flow field generated in low slope VSFs is more compatible with fish swimming capabilities, since it exhibits a predominantly 2D behaviour, whereas at higher slope values upwelling and downwelling phenomena occur and increased turbulence in the pools can significantly affect fish passage.
