Abstract: Operation and supervision of navigation locks require data collection. Usually, modern locks are equipped with multiple sensors connected to the controller of their electro-mechanical system. These sensors are notably used for gates and valve operations. However, standard data collection is not sufficient to support investigation of the hydraulic performance of the lock leveling. Additional data is required to investigate discharge and head loss in the culvert system, water surface oscillations in the lock chamber and associated mooring forces, surges in upstream or downstream reaches due to leveling discharge, cavitation risk at valves, etc. Specialized measurement devices have to be used in these particular cases. This paper discusses their specificities and provides some application examples.
