Abstract: In the rivers and surface waters of the Weinviertel, Lower Austria, suspended sediment load is aimed to be reduced. Thus, non-controlled, small flood retention basins with permanent open outflow have been investigated whether they can also be used as sediment retention basins. This research focuses on optimizing the sedimentation processes in such a flood retention basin through structural measures. Square basins with four different variants of the position of inlet and outlet were analyzed using the three dimensional numerical hydrodynamic solver RSim-3D. The variant with the highest sedimentation efficiency has the inlet at the southern basin boundary on the west side and the outlet at the eastern basin boundary on the south side.
