Abstract: An experimental investigation was conducted to elucidate the effects of varying spanwise blockage ratios (10%, 25%, 50%) on the turbulent flow characteristics around a 45º upstream spillway ramp. The experiments were conducted using a particle image velocimetry system and comprehensive analyses were performed to analyze the flow topology. The water depth over the spillway crest was maintained at 0.2h, where h is the height of the spillway model, and the oncoming flow velocity was maintained at 0.069 m/s for all tested cases. The preliminary results indicate that the flow topology near the bottom wall is significantly dependent on the spanwise blockage ratio of the ramps. However, regardless of the spanwise blockage, a recirculation bubble was consistently observed near the foot of the spillway. Notably, for the 10% blockage case, the recirculation bubble appeared smaller at the foot of the ramp, accompanied by lower magnitudes of turbulent kinetic energy along the test channel, potentially creating a more favorable pathway for downstream migration of fish.
