Abstract: Hydromorphology is one of the two quality components supporting the evaluation of the ecological quality of a river reach according to the specifications of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). However, a standard procedure for definition and classification of hydromorphological parameters is still not available. A common definition would allow to compare different restoration projects, and a classification is needed to evaluate the success of a restoration measure. At present, recommended parameters are based on cross-sectional surveys, and a measure is considered as successful if the diversity or variability of considered parameters increased.
