Abstract: The current paper aims at presenting the hydraulic transients analysis and the proposed surge protection devices, designed for three micro-hydropower plants to be installed in existing water supply systems in Portugal. Surge protection is designed for the most severe operating scenario, the full load rejection of the turbine with a wicket gate closure. Different surge protection solutions have been analysed. The three solutions have a bypass pipe to the turbines coupled with other surge protection devices -- a downstream surge tank or a set of pressure relief valves -- to ensure double surge protection to the water supply whose main purpose is to transport water to downstream municipalities.
