Abstract: Through the example of two hydropower case studies located in Europe and South-East-Asia, respectively, the aim of this paper is to point out the importance of field observations to achieve a better understanding of sediment dynamics and a sustainable management strategy of sediment fluxes in hydropower projects. Sediment surveys are indeed of utmost importance to understand and predict the channel response to possible human disturbances, as well as their propagation through drainage basins. Generally, three main issues should be addressed in such survey: river morphology and dynamics, sediment properties and sediment fluxes.
