Abstract: Numerical modeling of the interaction between river flow, ice floes, and structures (e.g., is required to assess vulnerabilities in the performance or strength of hydraulic structures in cold regions. The majority of fluid-ice-structure models are based on the rigid-ice multi-body motion. These models use predetermined and constant ice floe size and shape and ignore ice cracking and breakup mechanism. Such failure mechanisms can largely impact floes' contact dynamic and the load on the target structure. This study works toward integrating the ice failure mechanism into a fully-Lagrangian (particle-based) fluid-ice-structure model. The model uses the mesh-free moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method for the continuum (fluid and solid) modeling. Further, a mechanism based on the failure of a brittle material (with slight elastic deformation and no plastic deformation when subjected to stress) is introduced to the solid-ice model. The model is validated and evaluated using two benchmark experiments on ice failure, including a “three-point bending test” and a fluid-induced ice failure experiment. The good agreement between the numerical and experimental results proves the reliability and accuracy of the model for simulating the ice failure processes.
