Abstract: A rational mathematical model based on kinematic reasoning alone is presented that provides a realistic description of the physical processes that take place as a horizontal rock apron launches in stages and then gradually covers and protects an eroding riverbank. Adequacy of apron thickness, the amount of stone lost during deployment, and the lateral extent of bank erosion before complete slope coverage is established are factors that can be assessed using the model. The formulation accounts for the regularly repeated processes of slope erosion followed by rock settlement that take place along a receding riverbank. Application of the falling apron model to design new training works along the Padma (Lower Ganges) River at Sara village in Bangladesh, about 5 km upstream from the Hardinge Bridge (a historic double-line railway bridge) is described.
