Abstract: Some rainfall time series recorded in different Italian climate areas were analyzed and several samples of independent rainfall events were extracted. For each time series and for each storm the total volume, the wet weather duration and the interevent dry time were computed and assumed to be elements of three separate samples. Then the “dependence structure” of the three pairs of random variables was analyzed within the framework of the copula approach. A not negligible positive concordance was shown by the volume-duration pair, for which the best fit for the sample frequencies was obtained through the Gumbel-Hougaard copula function. The interevent time though showed to be reasonably independent of both volume and duration, suggesting the use of independence copula functions. Joint probability distributions were finally derived, by assuming a Weibull probabilistic model for the three marginal distributions.
