Abstract: In order to conduct restoration design of abandoned river channels which is necessary due to the artificial maintenance of rivers, it is very important to evaluate changes in the river through the analysis of past and present river channels. However, due to a lack of past data because of domestic conditions, there is a lot of difficulty in understanding topographical information of spatiotemporal changes in rivers. Therefore, this study analyzes the changes in past and present river channels using aerial photographs and examines the applicability of river channel evaluation through image analysis. Aerial photograph analysis conducts analysis of river changes by applying the image analysis method and GIS analysis method on the Cheongmi River, which appears to have frequent formation of abandoned channels due to artificial factors. As a result of this analysis, we have quantitatively identified the form and size of abandoned channels, changes in the vertical-section length and cross-section length of rivers, and microtopographical changes. More importantly, we have verified that morphological changes in sandbars due to artificial straightening are important data in identifying the state of the current river channels. Through these results, although there are limitations in two-dimensional information from aerial photographs, we were able to evaluate the changes in river channel morphology after artificial maintenance of the river. Furthermore, by evaluating the entire section of the Cheongmi River comprehensively and regionally, it is considered to be important data in the application of river channel design for future restoration of rivers.
