Abstract: Stability of a single rock riprap particle is evaluated based on the ratio of moments resisting overturning to moments promoting overturning of the particle. Departing from the conventional approach, the buoyant force is not subtracted from the gravitational force to obtain the submerged weight of a particle. Instead, the buoyant force is treated separately and is split into components that resist and promote overturning, similar to the conventional treatment of submerged particle weight. When gravitational and buoyant forces are considered separately and spilt into resisting and overturning components, a consistent stability factor results that tends to unity as rock specific gravity approaches one from above.
