Abstract: Turbulence constitutes one of the principal mechanisms of energy dissipation in plunge pools. In falling jets and in dissipation basins appear high turbulence and aeration phenomena that cannot be correctly studied by the classical methodologies. Given this problem, and based on the different experimental results obtained in the study of free falling jets, researchers are characterizing such flows in the Laboratory of the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena (Spain) .Velocities, pressures and air entrainment rates are being obtained and analyzed. The methodology of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can simulate the interaction between different fluids, such as the two-phase water-air flows case. The CFD codes are based on the numerical solution of the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations (RANS) ,together with turbulence models with different degrees of complexity. In this way, the results obtained in laboratory are compared with the complementary numerical model.
