About
At the beginning of 2019, the former Institute of Water Management, Hydrology and Hydraulic Engineering (IWHW) was split up and our new Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and River Research (IWA) was created. Our focus lies on integral hydraulic engineering, with these core elements at the heart of our mission: water use - water protection - protection from the water. These include our research areas and expertise in renewable energy with sustainable hydropower, integrated flood risk management, (eco-) hydraulics, river research and hydraulic engineering, with an emphasis on sediment management and river morphology, river restoration as well as waterway infrastructure for inland navigation. Our methods include field measurements, numerical modelling, and physical models based on theoretical and applied basic research. Our research findings are published in SCI- and specialised journals, presented at scientific conferences and specialist symposia, and disseminated through print and audiovisual media.
