The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (commonly referred to as IITM or IIT Madras) is a prestigious public technical university situated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is distinguished as one of the eight Institutes of Eminence in India and is recognized as an Institute of National Importance among the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Established in 1959, IIT Madras was established with both technical and financial support from the former government of West Germany. It is the third Indian Institute of Technology initiated by the Government of India. Over the years, IIT Madras has consistently garnered acclaim, particularly in the field of engineering. It has consistently secured the top position among engineering institutes in India according to the Ministry of Education's National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) since the inception of the ranking system in 2016.
