INRAE, the French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment, created on 1st of January 2020, is a major player in research and innovation. INRAE is a targeted research institute resulting from the merger of INRA and IRSTEA. It is a community of 12,000 people with over 200 research units and about 40 experimental units located in 18 regional centers throughout France. The institute is among the world leaders in agricultural and food sciences, in plant and animal sciences, and is 11th in the world in ecology and environment. INRAE’s main goal is to be a key player in the transitions necessary to address major global challenges. In the face of the increase in population, climate change, scarcity of resources and decline in biodiversity, the institute develops solutions for multiperformance agriculture, high quality food and sustainable management of resources and ecosystems.

Organisation Activities
Beyond research activities, INRAE proposes expertise and support that inform public policies from the local to the international level. It develops partnerships with the many stakeholders in the field: farmers, private companies, NGOs, regional governments...each with a variety of perspectives and approaches. It provides open-source tools for promoting innovation that allow the free exchange of ideas, knowledge, and experience. Among the 14 research divisions, the Aqua (Aquatic ecosystems, water resources and risks) research division is dealing with fresh water systems with a specific focus on climate change adaptation and risk management. The RiverLy research unit combines skills in ecology, microbiology, ecotoxicology, environmental chemistry, hydrology and hydraulics. Their researches cover multiple scales from microhabitats to large catchments and global scales.
