Abstract: Traditional river training structures are built using riprap that can be undermined and must be undergo through costly maintenance to preserve its function. Especially for bridge piers protected with riprap, its failure can contribute to bridge collapse. The objective of the current project is to investigate the temporal development of scour around bridge pier protected with a riprap sloping structure. In this preliminary investigation, the results from a flume experiment of the scour around the riprap protection of a model bridge pier are presented. Results for the first six hours of the scour development are shown to assess the flow contributing to the scour hole development. To that goal, bed morphology and flow conditions were collected in 1-hour intervals, and distribution of quadrant events along the flume centerline was investigated.
