Specializing in the innovative development of criteria, experimental methods, instrumentation, and sensors for analyzing flow and sediment transport, my research contributes significantly to advancing sediment transport models. This work is crucial for water professionals addressing diverse engineering challenges, highlighting the importance of accurately predicting sediment entrainment in turbulent flows. My investigations have revealed the inadequacies of conventional sediment transport prediction techniques, which overlook turbulence effects. I have introduced a groundbreaking theoretical framework that integrates the dynamic aspects of hydrodynamic forces influencing sediment transport. Leveraging modern, non-intrusive, and high-precision methods, my research provides compelling experimental support for these enhanced theoretical criteria, proving their superiority. Focused on elucidating the core mechanisms behind turbulence-induced particle entrainment, my work also pioneers the development of novel tools for improved process characterization. I aim to further these advancements by designing new sensors to elevate flow and sediment transport measurement precision and exploring these innovative technologies' applicability to fields like ecology and geo-environment.

The primary focus of Dr Valyrakis’ research is to develop the theories, methods and tools to better study, understand and assess the hydrodynamic conditions responsible for the onset of entrainment of coarse grains in turbulent flows. Knowledge of such threshold flow conditions is important for a variety of applications ranging from environmental hydraulics (such as protection of hydraulic structures from scour) to stream ecology (assessment of the ecologically and environmentally sound flow conditions for the protection of stream habitat).
