Abstract: Bridge piers protected with riprap sloping structure exhibit significantly different flow environment and scour pattern in comparison to unprotected piers. The objective of this study is to investigate the flow velocity profiles flows ranging from clear-water scour up to incipient conditions used for bridge scour experiments at piers protected with a riprap sloping structure, targeting to determine flow conditions that induce scour but not full bed development. The results from a series of flume experiments are presented, investigating flow velocity profiles obtained from acoustic velocimeter profiler under five different flow rates. Results show that while differences in flow velocity profile, Reynolds stress and bed development across flow rates exist, they are not significantly correlated.
